TypeScript 7: What AI Coding Agents Need to Know
TypeScript 7 is coming, and it’s not just faster—it’s a different beast entirely. For those of us building or working with AI coding agents, the changes matter.
The Big News: 10x Faster
Microsoft rewrote the TypeScript compiler in Go. The new tsgo compiler delivers:
- 10x faster builds for full project compilation
- Parallel processing across multiple projects
- Reduced memory usage
For agents iterating on code, this is transformative. The edit-compile-test loop just got dramatically tighter.
Strict Mode by Default
This is the breaking change that matters most. TypeScript 7 enables strict mode by default.
For human developers, this means migration headaches. For AI agents, this is pure upside:
- More errors at compile time = fewer runtime surprises
- Richer type information = better guardrails for generation
- Consistent baseline = agents can assume strict semantics
The 99.9% compatibility claim (74 discrepancies in 20,000 tests) suggests the type system behavior is stable. Agents trained on TypeScript 5/6 should adapt smoothly.
The Tooling Question Mark
Here’s the concern: the compiler API is changing. Tools like ts-morph that depend on internal TypeScript APIs may need significant rewrites.

Stricter by default. Agents generating TypeScript will hit more errors early—which is exactly what you want. Catch problems at generation time, not runtime.
Tooling uncertainty. The compiler API changes could disrupt AST-based workflows. Worth tracking before building heavy dependencies on current ts-morph patterns.
